The Courtenay St property is the second Taranaki home listed with an asking price of over $5 million this year.
If there was an open house for Taranaki’s new $5 million property, real estate agent Pete Bayliss believes “half of New Plymouth” would show up.
Bayliss, of McDonald Real Estate, said he has fielded numerous calls about the Courtenay St two-story home, which is on the market for claims in excess of $5.45 million.
The five-bedroom, four-bathroom family home, built in 2019, was attracting interest from across the country.
“There are a few people here (in Taranaki) who have the kind of money to buy this place,” Bayliss said.
“It’s top quality, easy going and totally private.”

The house has a saltwater pool, secret doors, and automation for everything from media and gates to TV screens and curtains, all of which can be controlled from a smartphone.
It has underfloor heating and a designer woodshed built into the three-car garage.
With 560 m², including the pool house, the garden house and the outdoor kitchen, the house is about three times the size of an average detached house.
It sits on a 1045 square meter section, which allows ample parking, lawns and a garden, which are watered by an irrigation system and drip feed lines. Like the gadgets inside the house, these too are automated.
Some people had asked about the $5.45 million price tag, but Bayliss said the location, property size and build quality were exceptional.
“You can’t build a house like this, everything has been thought of.
“We went there a few days ago, and everyone was saying, there was no way to add value to this place, everything is so well done.”
Thanks to its height and location, the house offers sea views from the master bedroom and views of Taranaki Maunga from the other upstairs bedroom.
Next to the master bedroom is an en-suite bathroom as well as a huge walk-in closet.
The house was designed by New Plymouth architect Tony Biesiek and built by Clelands Construction.
In 2019, the property had a capital value of $3,600,000, with rates of $6,279 per year.
The average home price in the New Plymouth district is just under $700,000.
Last month, a four-bedroom home just south of New Plymouth grabbed headlines for its $5.75 million price tag, the highest ever asking price in the area.
The house has generated some interest, but has yet to be sold, said agent Beau Burmester, of Property Brokers New Plymouth.
If either property sells for the asking price, or even for a million or less, it will set a new record for the area.
Jimmy and Denise Seed have put their house on the market. Its sale price could break a record.
The most expensive home for sale in Taranaki to date was a Hamblyn St property in Strandon, New Plymouth, which was sold by Bayliss for $3.5 million late last year.
Vinni Uhila of Uhila Building Solutions in New Plymouth said the price per square meter to build an architecturally designed house can vary wildly.
Usually around $5,000, sometimes it can go up to $10,000 per square meter, depending on the plans.
“The price per square meter has definitely increased in recent years.”
