Notepad++ 8.3.2 improves handling and performance of very large files

Notepad++ is a popular open source alternative and replacement for Notepad, the default Windows plain text editor. Notepad’s default text editor hasn’t received many updates over the years, but Microsoft recently revealed that it plans to offer updated versions with an enhanced feature set through its Microsoft Store.

Notepad++ has been the go-to application for many Windows users when it comes to plain text editing. Features that make it a better solution for many are its support for larger files and plugins, programming language support, advanced find and replace functionality and much more. The text editor quickly opens plain text files and is offered as a portable version or as an installer.

The latest major version of Notepad++, version 8.2, was released on January 1, 2022. It fixed a memory leak and introduced new features, including the much-requested exclude folder option for its search functionality in the files.

Notepad 8.3.2 is a bugfix release for the most part, but it also includes some improvements. The first improves program performance when outputting under specific configurations. Users who have noticed delays when closing Notepad++ while large files are open in the editor may benefit.

For those interested, the two settings that affected performance were the unchecked Remember current session for next launch and the default (single instance) checked.

Notepad++ users who open large files using the app may benefit from improved large file support. Files of 2 gigabytes or more benefit from the improvement. You can read it here if you are interested in the details of the patch.
