Newcastle United 1-0 Chelsea, Premier League: post-match reaction, ratings

A strong atmosphere welcomed the players, but it was a very messy game from the start. A couple of injury timeouts in the first ten minutes ensured neither team went into any sort of flux. Neither goalkeeper saw much, if any, action in the opening 45 games, with the game devolving into interrupted play in midfield for most of the time.

Chelsea changed things up at half-time and the game opened up a bit more as a result. But just when it looked like we were going to score, with Christian Pulisic threatening and Conor Gallagher making an excellent save, Joe Willock propelled the home side ahead with a powerful strike, turning a poor touch from Almirón into an assist .

Chelsea tried to come up with an answer, but not much happened until the final two minutes of injury time. But it was far too little, far too late. Where was that fight, that emotion earlier? The game was set up to be won by a mistake or a lucky bounce, and that is precisely what happened.

  • Four changes since midweek, with Azpi for Cucurella, Jorginho for Zakaria and Mount & Gallagher replacing Ziyech & Pulisic. Also a change to a back-three which played a lot more like a back-five, with the wingers being very conservative
  • RLC is the latest to join the injured list, appearing to pull his calf minutes later. Silva appealed, Azpi moving wide.
  • Pulisic at half-time, Gallagher (!?) moved to right-back, but then switched to a more 4-3-3 look, with Chalobah shooting wide to right-back and Gallagher joining in midfield.
  • Chelsea in eighth place after Liverpool’s victory earlier in the day.
  • Three consecutive defeats in the league, five without a win, 2 points out of 15.
  • Next step: the WORLD CUP break. Can we restart the season?
