Garage doors

Don’t give your keys to thieves

In recent weeks, Mount Isa Police have seen a marked increase in break and enters (burglaries) and stolen motor vehicles.

Did you know that in Queensland, one in two cars is stolen with the car keys?

This is a timely reminder to review your home and vehicle security arrangements, keeping your keys out of sight.

To reduce the risk of a break-in in your home, we encourage you to:

  • Make sure doors are always locked with a key, even when you’re home
  • Always make sure car and house keys, as well as cell phones, purses and wallets, are out of sight
  • Lock up valuables such as bicycles, lawnmowers and garden tools such as ladders, mowers, etc.
  • Always keep the door to your garage or shed closed and locked with a key.

To reduce the risk of vehicle theft or theft of valuables, we encourage you to:

  • Remove all valuables (phones, cigarettes, cash, laptops, purses, keys, etc.) from the vehicle. If you must leave valuables in your vehicle, keep them out of sight
  • Be sure to lock all doors and windows, even when the vehicle is parked in your driveway or on your property
  • Park in a well-lit area
  • Don’t leave spare keys anywhere in the vehicle and keep garage door openers out of sight.
  • Consider installing a car alarm, immobilizer, spark arrester, or other security device
  • Do not leave personal documents in your vehicle as you risk having your identity stolen and committing fraud using your name.

Tradespeople can increase their vehicle’s security by locking toolboxes and drawers on vehicle trays and considering engraving tools, making it easier to locate the true owners in the event of theft.

For specific unique items like keys, tools, and vehicles, take photos so you can provide them to the police or your insurance company in case something goes wrong. A real photograph of a vehicle can help police locate it much easier if they know exactly what they are looking for.

While many believe we shouldn’t have to, it’s sad to see that there are members of our society who prey on those who don’t secure their property.

If you can afford a dash cam that works when your vehicle is parked, then you’ll take your security to the next level. It can record who approaches your vehicle and can save you from parking accidents.

A good dash cam is also a good investment in case of road rage incidents or accidents.

With the tips above, you can minimize your chances of being targeted by opportunistic thieves.
