The closure between Forest and Weymouth streets will allow the removal of the tower crane from the MMC construction site.

Portland, Maine – Congress Street will be closed between Forest and Weymouth streets on Friday and Saturday November 4 and 5 to allow the removal of the large tower crane that was used to build the new Malone Family Tower at Maine Medical Center.

Through traffic will be diverted via St. John Street to Park Avenue, then up Weymouth Street to Congress Street. Local traffic will have an optional detour on Forest Street to Boynton Street and then to Weymouth Street. Local businesses will be open at their normal hours during the detour and will remain fully accessible.

As part of this detour, the Congress Street entrance to the MMC Visitors Garage will be closed. Patients and visitors can still access the garage through the Crescent Street entrance. Additionally, patients and visitors to the Maine Medical Partner clinics at 887 Congress St. will need to access that building’s parking lot through the Forest Street entrance.

The detour should start at 7 a.m. on Friday, November 4 and end at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 5. Work on both days will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In the event of bad weather, work may continue until Sunday 6 November.

Detours will be fully signposted and flaggers will direct traffic.

The Malone Family Tower will reorient the hospital towards Congress Street, increase the availability of private rooms and provide state-of-the-art procedure rooms focusing on cardiovascular care. Its opening is scheduled for 2024.

The Cardiovascular Tower will have a total of seven floors plus a basement, with new patient units totaling 96 beds in private rooms once the building opens.

MMC appreciates the support and understanding of the community and apologizes for the inconvenience of the detour.
