Car repair times increase as supply chain issues lead to backups at body shops

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Supply chain issues have impacted almost every industry and even body shops are in lockdown.

Edgar Barron is the shop foreman at Long Lewis Ford in Hoover and he said they had cars in the shop for one to two months waiting for parts to arrive. He said engines and transmissions are some of the hardest to find right now, so being diligent about your oil changes and maintenance will go a long way. Barron said finding employees to do the job has been difficult, but they are well staffed at the moment. He said the biggest problem is that US and foreign parts are taking so long to arrive.

“A lot of our parts come from overseas, and parts shipped from overseas are really hard to get here,” Baron said. “Then they are rolled out all over the United States and then shipped to your dealership or to your stores, making it very difficult to get your parts. Then finding the right people to install it is another process.

Barron said that due to supply chain issues, many parts are more expensive.
